What is the difference between a coffin and casket?
A common question we are asked is the difference between a coffin and casket. In New Zealand, the terms coffin and casket are often used interchangeably. Technically, a coffin has a tapered shape with wider shoulders, while a casket is rectangular with a hinged lid. But in everyday language, either word may be used to describe the vessel used for a funeral or cremation.
